  • The extra distance on a rain affected track didn't stop JIMMY CHOUX from taking out the Group 1 Telecom Derby in brilliant style at Ellerslie on Saturday.

He settled a little worse than midfield and was some 7 lengths off the leaders at the the 800 meters, he drew out to challenge turning for home and put 2 lengths on them at the 200 meter mark, HISTORIAN looked like he might overcome him at the 100 but once JIMMY saw him he drew away again to win comfortably by 2 lengths, HISTORIAN was a gallant run for second, ON THE LEVEL was 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

The colt by THORNPARK - CIERZO Is trained by John Bary and was ridden by Jonathan Riddell. JIMMY CHOUX has now won $2.2 Million in stakes. Jonathan Riddell's seasons earnings for horses he has ridden now eclipses $3 million.

John Bary, " No Matter what you say now , yes he can stay and yes he can win the Derby. There has been none better than Jonathan all season, he's as cool as the other side of the pillow, got ice in his veins at the moment, he loves the horse as much as we do and he's delivered for us. On to Sydney, hopefully he pulls up good and thanks to all my staff at home."

Jonathan Riddell, " This horse is something special I think the whole country should get behind him, he got a wet track today but I think he would of given them a hiding on a firm track."
